A’Ibom SUBEB Debunks Non-Payment Of Gratuities
The Akwa Ibom State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has debunked allegations that benefits of deceased primary school teachers were not paid to their next of kin.
Mrs Theresa Ekon, the Permanent Secretary, SUBEB, debunked the allegations in an interview with newsmen last Saturday in Uyo.
Ekon said that Gov. Godswill Akpabio had directed that all retired primary school teachers, both living and dead, be paid their benefits and had made money available for the exercise
She also said that a committee had been set up to take care of the payment and that the committee had to carry out thorough verification before making any payment.
Ekon said that the delay experienced before the payment was to ensure that proper verification was done in the case of paying the next of kin of late primary school teachers so as to avoid complication.
She said that the requirement needed from the next of kin was a letter of administration and certification that they were truly the next of kin to the deceased.
The permanent secretary, therefore, appealed to the beneficiaries to be patient as the payment was being done in batches.
She explained that SUBEB was in charge of preparing the vouchers, while the office of the state accountant general was responsible for payment.
Ekon assured the people that the governor’s directive on payment of gratuities would be implemented, adding that the first and second batches of vouchers had been forwarded to the sub-treasuries for payment.
