Dockworkers Get 2,000% Salary Increase After 17Yrs

Published

on

After 17 years of engaging Dockworkers in the Nation’s Port terminals, the Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) says the Concessionaires at the nation’s seaports have increased the salaries and wages of Dockworkers by 2,000 per cent.
Chairman, STOAN, Princess Vicky Hasstrup, stated this during the maiden Dockworkers Day celebration organised by the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) in Lagos.
At the event, with the theme, “Dockworkers: The Unsung Heroes of Nigerian Port Reforms”, the Chairman said the Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) ensures fair treatment of dockworkers, payment of living wages and institutionalisation of retirement benefits to them.
“You all are witnesses to the situation at the ports and the poor working condition of dockworkers before the 2006 port concession exercise. Before the concession, dockworkers were poorly paid.
“They did not have conditions of service. Indeed, they did not have identifiable employers. Their safety, in the course of performing their duties, was not taken to heart.
“They were exploited, dehumanised and underpaid. But all of that has changed, thanks to the bold move by the Federal Government to reform and concession the ports in 2006.
“As you all know, the port concession transferred cargo-handling operations from NPA to professional private terminal operators, who won lease agreements ranging from 15 to 25 years.
“NPA remained the landlord, technical regulator and provider of marine services.
“Seventeen years into the port concession exercise, there is a general consensus that the exercise has fully delivered on its promises.
“The landlord model of port concession adopted by the Federal Government has freed the government of the financial burden required to develop and operate the terminals.
“This burden has been transferred to the private terminal operators also known as concessionaires.
“In addition to not spending money to acquire cargo handling equipment and other associated terminal operating costs, the Federal Government now realises much more revenue from the ports.
“In addition to modernising the port, we have collectively worked together to give a new lease of life to our dockworkers.
“Every other year, members of the STOAN and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, under the supervision of NIMASA, sign new CBA midwifed by the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) to further enhance the welfare of dockworkers in the country. t
“In essence, unlike what obtained before port concession, our dockworkers now have conditions of service.
“Today, the average take-home pay of a dockworker has increased by more than 2,000 per cent over what it was in 2006. The CBA between the Union and Terminal Operators has also ensured industrial harmony at the port.
“We recognise the importance of our dockworkers. They are professionals and essential workers. They are vital and crucial to port operation. Indeed, without dockworkers, we cannot talk of effective port operation.
“The story of the success of port concession cannot be written without copious mention of the role of dockworkers”, Haastrup said, assuring the commitment of terminal operators to the welfare of dockworkers.
Also speaking, the President-General, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, congratulated SCAN for putting together the eventful programme to celebrate dockworkers.
“I want to congratulate SCAN for putting together this eventful programme to celebrate our own: the veterans and our unsung heroes still on duty”, Adeyanju stated.
He said the era of hooliganism and thuggery in the union has since given way to a new mindset, which has worked in favour of dockworkers.
According to him, “Nigerian dockworkers are no longer backbenchers or troublemakers at the port, but have rather become essential port workers and critical

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting media growth and development as a critical tool for effective dissemination of government policies, especially as Nigeria pursues its $1 trillion economy target by 2030.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, stated this at the 2026 Annual Conference of the Finance and Business Online Publishers Association (FiBOP) held at Lekki, Lagos.
Adeniyi, who was represented by the Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Lagos Free Trade Zone Command, Abdulgany Oloro Usman, said the media has a vital role in ensuring government policies are well communicated to the public.
Also speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, who was represented by his Special Assistant on Revenue, Dr. Olufemi Olarinde, urged media practitioners to shun sensationalism and partner with government in communicating accurate economic data.
According to Oyedele, public trust is strengthened when citizens clearly understand government actions, the rationale behind them and the metrics for measuring progress.
“Enough of sensational news. Government must provide timely information, welcome constructive scrutiny, and explain its decisions transparently,” the Minister said.
Highpoint of the event was the conferment of the *”Transformative Reforms and Leadership Excellence” Award* on the Customs Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, by FiBOP.
The award recognises Adeniyi’s exceptional stewardship which has catalysed a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s trade and border management landscape, particularly in trade facilitation, institutional transparency, technological innovation and modernisation of the Service.
The Association noted that since assuming office, Adeniyi has transformed the Service from a traditional revenue collector into a modern, globally compliant trade facilitator through dismantling of bureaucratic bottlenecks, streamlining of cargo clearance procedures, and championing the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) scheme and the Time Release Study (TRS).
It further cited his deployment of non-intrusive inspection technologies, enhanced inter-agency intelligence sharing, intensified anti-smuggling operations and the rollout of the Unified Customs Management System as key achievements that have reduced port congestion, lowered cost of doing business and boosted revenue generation

The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA), Dr Pius Akutah, has announced plans to introduce an Award of Honesty for three cadets of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, annually, beginning from 2027.
Akutah said the initiative was aimed at promoting integrity, ethical conduct and professionalism among future maritime practitioners.
He made the announcement while delivering his goodwill message at the Academy’s 2026 Cadets’ Graduation Ceremony, last week where he congratulated the graduating cadets on successfully completing their academic training.
The NPERA boss described graduation as the beginning of a new phase of professional development, offering opportunities for career advancement, practical experience and meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s maritime industry.
He encouraged the graduates to approach their careers with dedication, discipline and a commitment to continuous learning as they transition from academic training into professional practice.
He stressed that professional competence must be complemented by integrity and responsible conduct to build a credible maritime industry and sustain public confidence in the sector.
According to him, the proposed Award of Honesty would promote a culture of integrity among young maritime professionals and reinforce the ethical values required for responsible leadership and professional excellence.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening maritime education, professional certification and sea-time training.
Oyetola, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Fatima Sugra Mahmood, at the ceremony, also called for stronger collaboration between maritime training institutions and industry operators to prepare graduates for the demands of the maritime industry.
He emphasised the importance of equipping maritime graduates with the requisite professional qualifications, practical experience and industry-relevant skills to enhance their employability and effective participation in the sector.
The Minister also highlighted the need for closer collaboration between maritime training institutions and industry operators to bridge the gap between academic training and professional practice, thereby strengthening the capacity of Nigeria’s maritime workforce.
The ceremony also featured the formal launch of the Academy’s Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS), an initiative designed to improve administrative efficiency, transparency and accountability in the institution’s operations.
The Academy graduated 314 cadets from its National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.
