The Federal Government has assured that the implementation of recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland would be holistically pursued, and religiously delivered for the benefit of the people.
The government made this commitment at Eleme, headquarters of Eleme Local Government Area, last Saturday, during the official handover of 39 new remediation lots to contractors for the clean-up of polluted sites in Ogoniland.
While performing the handover ceremony, Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, assured the people of speedy completion of the 2nd phase of the Ogoni clean-up by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Projects (HYPREP).
Abdullahi charged the various contracting firms to ensure effective delivery of the assigned tasks within the period specified in the contractual agreement, as everything has been made available by government to ensure the smooth take off and completion of the project in the best interest of the people.
Responding, Chairman of Eleme Local Government Council, Chief Obarilomate Ollor, assured the minister of the Council’s support and good working relationship throughout the project duration.
In his remarks, the Oneh Eta Ogale XI and Oneh Nchia X, Chief G.M.B. Okpabi, also charged the contractors to be people-oriented by ensuring that the Ogale community feels the impact of the project in the area.
He advised to proactively implement a robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, as he assured of the readiness of the people to provide the enabling environment for the smooth undertaking of the project.
