Delta Constructs 1,750.83km Roads In Seven Years
The Delta State Government says it has successfully constructed over 1,750.83km of roads from 2015 to 2022.
Disclosing this to newsmen in Asaba, the State capital, the state’s Commissioner for Works (Urban and Highways), Mr Noel Omodon, said the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration also constructed over 1,024.64km of drainages in the period under review.
Omodon said six bridges were also constructed by the administration, while 16 others were at various stages of completion.
The Works Commissioner said at the inception of Okowa’s administration, it was discovered that there was dearth of road infrastructure in the state which was needed to open up rural areas for enhanced agricultural production.
According to him, when government invests by providing road infrastructure, the people will be encouraged to complement government’s efforts by venturing into farming and other services.
On the sustainability of the road in difficult terrains, the works commissioner said there was a deliberate change in design, adding that a six-inch stone base was chosen to give a solid base that would withstand the test of time.
“In addition, government is constructing box culverts, triple cell culverts, drainages on most of the roads to remove all water from the roads as much as possible, because water is a major killer of roads,” he said.
Omodon noted that with the construction of bridges across the state, the government has opened up vast expanse of lands to farmers and transporters to boost socio-economic activities in the state.
