Delta Cautions Residents Against Blocking Water Channels
The Director-General, Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Mrs Joan Onyemaechi, has cautioned residents of the State against blockade of water channels to avoid flooding.
Onyemaechi gave the caution in a statement made available to newsmen in Asaba.
She said that the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led Government was committed to implementing projects that would protect the environment.
The D-G said the ongoing drainage project along DSS Road in Asaba, was a testimony of the government’s resolve to tackle flooding.
Onyemaechi urged residents of the State to indulge in activities that would protect the environment and support healthy living.
“Flooding is a major challenge in this parts. It’s our duty to ensure free flow of rainwater.
“Dumping refuse in the drains is environmentally unfriendly. We need to protect our environment,” she said.
She urged contractors handling drainage and other environmental protection projects in the State to be more proactive.
“As an agency, we shall continue to do our best to ensure the speedy completion of the projects.
“When the drains are free, rainwater will find its way out. To block the drain is to endanger lives.
“We need to change our attitude towards the environment in the interest of public health and safety,” she said.
