Customers Protest Power Outage In PH
Some Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) customers of Feeder 2, Line 33, on Monday staged a peaceful protest to the Alpha 1 zone, Rumuola office of PHED to register their discontent with the company over its failure to restore power supply in the area.
The feeder 2 customers comprising residents of Orazi and six other communities besieged the street in their numbers with placards conveying various inscriptions to express their disavowal over the persistent power outage in the area despite their consistency in the payment of bills to PHED.
The protest started from Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic to the Rumuola office of PHED with the protesters chanting various songs to demonstrate their anger with PHED.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards read; “PHED, Restore Our Light Now” “we’re tired of living in darkness” “PHED is a corrupt company” “ byepass are being committed by PHED staffs,” among others.
Addressing newsmen during the protest, coordinator of the Feeder 2 customers, Comrade Jeff Akaninwo, accused PHED of deliberately victimising the residents of the affected communities as overtures and agreements reached with the company to restore light in the area had been breached.
Speaking to newsmen, the Student Union President of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Comrade Prince Ebere, who was also part of the protest, said the students community has suffered great losses as a result of power outage by PHED and urged the company to restore power supply in the area.
Also addressing the press, the youth leader of Orazi community, Comrade Victor Ogunda Samuel said the power outage in the community has made the people to suffer economic losses as they spend heavily on diesel and fuel to run their power generating sets.
A community leader, chief Tony Onunwo said PHED as a company has failed in rendering its institutional services of power supply in the area, adding that the protest was to ensure that the company restore power in the affected area.
When contacted, the public relations unit of PHED declined comment on the issue.
