Group Plans Eco-Friendly Clubs In Schools
Rivers Network of NGOs (RINNGOS) has disclosed plans to set up eco-friendly clubs in schools across the 23 local government areas of Rivers State. The State Coordinator of the organisation, Dr Mina Ogbanga, who disclosed this in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt also said it is couching on outreach across communities in the state with a view to sensitising them on the negative effectS of the soot.
She said these proposed eco -friendly clubs was part of the group’s desire to promote education for sustainable development through community structures and environment.
Meanwhile, Dr Ogbanga has called for the conversion of gas being to national gas.
She said until this is done, the nation will continue to experience loss in revenues as well as the soot.
The environmentalist also stressed the need for the establishment of the Rivers State Air Quality Management Authority (RAMA) or a standing committee with a cross section of stakeholders where the primary responsibility should be ensuring clean air for the state and also include the development of ways and means of real time monitoring and documentation of the air quality index at various parts of the areas.
Speaking on another amendment to the state Environmental Protection Law, Ogbanga stressed the need for the incorporation of future generation of women youths and kids across all levels to be well informed about the environmental protection and climate action so as not to fall a victim.
“We call for a new subsection for mandatory inclusion of quarterly environmental orientation and awareness in all community structures across the three senatorial districts of Rivers State which will be directly managed by the proposed Rivers State Air Quality Management Agency.
“Indeed, the environment cannot be politicised. We recognises the need for harmonised standard operating procedures for dealing with recovered stolen crude or illegally refined products.
“There are suggestions that rather destroy it and aggravate pollution of the environment, retire stolen crude back to the refineries or other appropriate authorities”, she said.
