Rivers Community Wins N800bn Case Against Shell

A Federal High Court sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital, has ordered Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and two others to pay the sum of N800billion to members of Ejalawa Community in Oken-Ogosu in Egbalor-Ebubu in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State for damages caused to their farmlands and other destruction unleashed by oil spillage that happened on September 18, 2019.
The court ruled that the communities were entitled to compensation of N800billion for their farm products, fish ponds, several fish farms, fish nets, machineries, non-cleansing and non-maintenance of ruptured pipes of the 3rd Defendants that caused irreparable damage to the Plaintiffs several farmlands, hydrocarbon oil spillage or oil spillage, that occurred on September 18, 2019, and affected several farmlands of the Plaintiffs, including 2,390 hectares of farmlands at Ejalawa Community in Oken-Ogosu swamp farmlands in Egbalor of Ebubu.
The suit was instituted by 88 members of the community who suffered severed damages as a result of the oil exploration and actions of the defendants.
Justice T.G. Ringim also ordered Shell to promptly and expeditiously remediate the land of the Plaintiffs to its International Agricultural Soil (IAS).
The court also ordered Shell to depollute and rehabilitate the farms and more, particularly the fish ponds in the communities.
Lawyers to the plaintiffs, Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed (SAN); Daniel Ntuibane; and Clement Ugo Chukwuemeka; praised the court for remaining the last hope of common man, hence the community had suffered untold hardship for many years due to the action and inaction of the defendants.
They further praised the court for rendering justice to parties in accordance with the law.
The court further ruled that there will be two percent post judgement interest from the date of the ‘Judgement’ on the N8billion in favour of the communities.
The court also awarded the cost of N1million in favour of the communities as cost of action against the defendants.
Other two defendants in the suit are Shell International Exploration and Production BV, and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The Defendants have vowed to appeal the judgement of the court.

HoS Hails Fubara Over Provision of Accommodation for Permanent Secretaries

The Head of Service (HoS) of Rivers State, Dr. Mrs. Inyingi S. I. Brown, has commended Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, for approving befitting accommodation for Permanent Secretaries in the state.

A breakdown of the initiative shows that 319 forms will be distributed across the 319 political wards in Rivers State, while five forms are allocated to non-indigenes and five forms to persons living with disabilities.
