Unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers reportedly stormed Jibi community, last Monday night, kidnapping the community chief (Esu Jibi), Ibrah Dahiru Liman, and injuring two vigilantes who attempted to rescue the victim.
JIBI is a community directly behind Mopol 45 (Ibrahim Abubakar Barrack) along Deidei – Zuba Express way in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
According to an eyewitness, Alex Minga who spoke to Afripost in Abuja, the kidnappers invaded the community at about 10pm, last Monday night.
Minga said, “The community at about 10pm to 11pm, yesterday, started hearing gunshots which experts confirmed to be sound of AK-47.
“Everyone in the community is now completely terrified as throughout the night, there were exchange of gunshots with the kidnappers but they, however, succeeded in Kidnapping the village Chief of Jibi.
Minga lamented that despite the community’s proximity to the Mopol 45 barracks, Jibi has suffered serious kidnappers’ attacks without any reasonable help from the police.
“This is about the fourth time the community is being attacked this year and the police will only come after the incident and claim they are on top of the situation. For how long will this continue?
“The fear of who is next has completely beclouded the community and no one is sleeping with two eyes closed anymore. Something has to be done fast before it gets out of hands.”
Another resident, who was a victim of the suspected kidnappers on March 26, 2021, Simon Abah, called on the appropriate authorities to kindly shift attention to the community before everyone is kidnapped in Jibi.
“I appeal to the Niger State Government, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCT), the Nigerian Police Force and other security operatives to, as a matter of urgency, come to their rescue in Jibi community before everyone is kidnapped.”
Esu Jibi’s abductors are yet to establish contact with the family.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Maryan Yusuf, was unable to be reached as at press time.
Similarly, unknown gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked Tsayau community in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing, at least, four persons.
It was gathered that the incident happened, last Monday, when the attackers stormed the community, shooting sporadically, and gunned down four before whisking unspecified number of residents to an unknown destination.
The lawmaker representing Jibia at the State House of Assembly, Mustapha Yusuf, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Katsina.
He revealed that many other residents were also injured during the attack.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Gambo Isa, said he was in a meeting.
He promised to revert shortly, but never did.

Guterres Backs Nigeria’s Bid For UN Security Council Seat …Hails Tinubu’s Reforms, Regional Security Role

United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has charged Nigeria with spearheading Africa’s quest for a restructured global order, describing the country as uniquely positioned to lead the continent toward superpower status.

Guterres, who backed Nigeria’s bid for the world body’s security council seat, also praised the economic reforms of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration as well as Nigeria’s leadership in stabilising the Sahel and ECOWAS regions, despite facing its own security challenges.

The UN scribe made the remarks last Friday night during a high-level bilateral meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima on the sidelines of the 39th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Speaking during the meeting, Guterres said Nigeria’s large population, sustained democratic governance, vast natural and human resources, and longstanding commitment to multilateralism placed it in a unique position to lead Africa in the evolving global order.

“Given Nigeria’s demographic strength, democratic continuity and deep resource base, the country stands a real chance of leading Africa to becoming the next superpower in the evolving global architecture,” he said.

The UN Secretary-General and the vice president discussed key developments in Nigeria and the country’s expanding leadership role in promoting regional stability across West Africa and the Sahel.

Guterres commended the remarkable and outstanding reforms of the administration of President Tinubu, noting that Nigeria’s bold economic restructuring and security commitments have strengthened its continental standing.

The meeting focused on strengthening Nigeria–UN collaboration to advance global economic growth, peace and security, sustainable development, and a coordinated humanitarian response across Africa.

In his remarks, Shettima thanked the UN Secretary-General for his leadership in advancing global peace, noting that Africa has benefited immensely from his tenure, even as the United Nations undergoes internal restructuring.

“We remain committed to multilateralism and to deepening our partnerships with the United Nations and other global institutions,” the vice president said.

Shettima also reiterated Nigeria’s longstanding call for comprehensive reform of the United Nations system to reflect evolving global realities.

He emphasised that Africa must have stronger representation in global decision-making structures and declared that Nigeria deserves a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Both leaders pledged to deepen cooperation, with Guterres reaffirming the UN’s support for Nigeria’s reform agenda and its growing leadership role in advancing peace, security, and development across Africa.
