Rivers Farmers Praise Wike Over Cassava Distribution
Rivers State farmers have praised Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike for the distribution of a special variety of cassava to farmers in the state.
State chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Chief Ofimaobari Igwe said this in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt. Igwe said the gesture will boost food production in Rivers State.
It is a welcome development. It is a special variety of cassava stem team 419. It will make food to be surplus in Rivers State.
AFAN chairman said the distribution exercise will make Rivers farmers to be self sufficient in food production, adding that the situation will also create employment opportunities for the teeming cassava farmers and other youths across the state.
According to him, the association has put in place mechanism to monitor the activities of beneficiaries with the view to ensuring that the stems are properly planted.
He also urged the government to look into boasting other areas of agriculture such as oil palm, fishery and others.
Igwe commended the governor for lifting the curfew on the state, stressing that it will enhance the transportation of food and other agricultural products from farms to the market and consumers thereby enhancing the availability of food in the market.
“Your Excellency, you have outperformed the cynics and have proved critics wrong. You have made us proud and we are proud of you,” he said.
He used the occasion to call on genuine farmers in the state who are yet to register with the association to come and do so at AFAN office ministry of agriculture.
