MWUN Commends NIMASA For Giving Scholarships To Rivers Youths
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Rivers State Chapter, has commended the management of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for giving scholarships to 10 indigent youths of Rivers State to study engineering and allied courses abroad.
MWUN said the gesture would encourage youths to study marine related courses and also boost the youths’ chances of gaining employments in the maritime sector
The Trustee Dockworker, MWUN, Rivers State Chapter, Comrade Harry Waite, made the remarks in an interview with The Tide.
He said the scholarship to study marine engineering and marine architecture would boost the youths’ chances of gaining employments in maritime sector.
According to him, the scholarship by NIMASA will create awareness about the importance of marine engineering and enhance the educational status of the Rivers youths.
“The scholarship by NIMASA would go along way in creating maritime awareness in the minds of the youths and reduce act of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea (GOG)”, he said.
The marina advised the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and shun acts capable of tarnishing the image of the state and the agency.
Comrade Waite called on other Federal Government agencies and oil companies operating in the state to emulate NIMASA and train the youths on how to improve their lives without taking to crimes.
He also commended NIMASA for partnering with the state government in tackling the menace of sea robbery, piracy and other forms of maritime crimes in the Niger Delta region.
He noted that incessant abduction of crew members and attacks on vessels by sea robbers had scared away many foreign investors from doing business in the region.
