Rivers Ready To Check Flood – Commissioner

As the rainy season draws closer, Rivers State Ministry of Environment says measures have been put in place to tackle causes of flood in the State.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Igbiks Tamuno who made this known during a meeting with his media aides in his office, said, in response to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NIMET) report in 2020 that the South should expect 210 or 280 days of rainfall with two weeks of concentration of rainfall, the Ministry has expedited action on sensitization and flood management.
Dr. Tamuno stated that the Ministry had been proactive in producing a template on sensitizing and informing the residents on precautionary measures put in place to reduce flood and cushion the effects in flood prone areas in the State.
The Commissioner said the Ministry would liaise with the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) in identifying flash points and in the area of sanitation and desilting of drainages.
He reiterated the Ministry’s resolve in ensuring that the impact of the flood was reduced to the barest minimum as health workers would also be on ground, stressing that the interest would be in the specifics of the operations.
He lauded the efforts of the flood committee as they left no stone unturned in ensuring maximum impact and further called on residents to desist from dumping refuse in drainages and water channels.
‘‘Environment is key and the Ministry is focused on getting results on issues that concern climate change specifically flooding as Rivers State is at a disadvantage as one of the areas that will be more affected,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Igbiks Tamuno, has urged residents of Rivers State to be proactive in order to prevent Corona Virus also known as COVID 19.
Dr. Tamuno made this call during a familiarization visit to the King of Okrika Kingdom, Dr. Alfred Abam in his palace.
He advised residents in the State to take their personal hygiene seriously and observe safety tips, stressing that sanitation is one key aspect the Ministry would take to a higher level.
The Commissioner assured residents that Government would not relent on efforts to sensitize and provide good sanitary services encouraging them to always wash their hands and make use of hand sanitisers.
