Group Partners NOSDRA, Others To Monitor Ogoni Clean-Up
In preparation for a thorough remediation process in Ogoniland, Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre (KWDRC) has concluded plans to partner the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to broaden the knowledge of stakeholders, especially Ogoni women on how to participate in the monitoring of the remediation process.
Speaking during a one-day stakeholders training on Participatory Monitor Mechanisms for Effective Clean-up in Ogoni, organised by Kebetkache Resource Centre, the Port Harcourt Zonal Director of NOSDRA, Cyrus Nkangwung said that the work of the group shows that it has the interest of the environment at heart.
Nkangwung disclosed that the clean-up exercise has not started, saying that what HYPREP was doing was merely preparatory steps towards the remediation activities, which he said, would soon kick-off, while stressing the need for other civil society organisations (CSOs) to partner NOSDRA to enlighten a larger section of the society on activities presently going on at the various sites.
The NOSDRA boss also challenged other CSOs to partner the agency to monitor the remediation process starting soon, so as to get a clearer picture and understanding of the extensive work that would be undertaken in the process, just as he expressed worries over the perception of some Ogonis that no work was going on at the sites, regretting that this was pure misinformation of the public.
Nkangwung listed NOSDRA’s focus during the remediation monitoring process to include ensuring soil treatment in line with best practices, depth of soil impact assessment, and testing chemicals and biological substances to ensure compliance with global standard to avoid further degradation of the environment, explaining that the Total Hydrocarbon (TPH) in the environment was basically what NOSDRA monitors to ensure all the companies meet the standard set for the process.
He assured Kebetkache of NOSDRA’s readiness to embark on Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to impacted sites whenever the group wishes, adding that it was the only way they can observe how NOSDRA takes decisions about cause of spill and impact it has on the environment and the people.
