PHALGA Boss Moves To Resttle 2,000 Flood Victims
The authorities of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area (PHALGA) say it has acquired a two-storey building in Mile 3 area to resettle about 2,000 flood victims in the area.
The Chairman of the council, Hon. Victor Ihunwo, made the plans public when he and other chairmen appeared before the House Committee on Environment, yesterday, over the level of preparations on the forecast by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) over flooding in 18 local government areas of the state.
Recall that earlier this year; NIMET predicted that some parts of the state would be affected by flooding, as it listed 18 local government areas, which include Obio/Akpor, Ikwerre, Oyigbo, Ahoada East and Ahoada West, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, and Abua/Odual, among others.
The alarm raised by NIMET had compelled the House Committee on Environment to invite local government chairmen on preparations to cushion the effect of the flood.
In a similar vein, the Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Hon Eugene Jaja and member representing Opobo/Nkoro State Constituency, Hon. Adonye Diri, had penultimate week toured some parts of the LGA affected by flooding.
Communities affected in the area include Queens Town, Opobo Town, .Nkoro, Epellema and Kalaibiama, among others.
Diri, who urged victims of the flood to be calm, assured that government would ensure that such natural disasters do not occur again.
Meanwhile, chairman of the council has called on the federal authorities to embark on shore protection of coastal communities in the area, as he warned that unless something was done, many communities in the area would be submerged.
