Flood Renders Hundreds Homeless In Community
Hundreds of indigenes of Aggah community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State have been rendered homeless, houses sub-merged and property valued at millions of naira destroyed by rampaging flood.
Lamenting the flood disaster, the Chairman of the Community’s Development Committee (CDC), Comrade Ironye Evidence Paddy explained that indigenes were now taking refuge in neighbouring communities following severe flooding which left in its wake sorrow and grief.
Comrade Ironye said private and public buildings, including schools, churches, civil centre (town hall) farms, fish ponds, among others, were mostly affected by the flood.
He disclosed that farmers were now harvesting their crops pre-maturely as victims were seeking for relief materials to alleviate their predicament.
The CDC boss therefore appealed to the federal and state governments as well as NEMA and other voluntary orgainsations to come to the aid of the community.
He noted that there were not Internally Displaced Persons camps in the area, adding that water-borne diseases may have hit the area as there were no potable water for indigenes.
On relief materials, the CDC Chairman wants beverages, drugs, food stuff and tents urging NEMA to consider the community which is the second largest and most populated community in ONELGA in the N3 billion Federal Government bailout for flood victims.
Ironye said Aggah community boasts of over 13 oil locations producing a chunk of the nation’s oil and gas resources, yet the community had nothing to show for it.
He lambasted the NDDC for not recognising the Community in the scheme of projects and warned that indigenes may resort to self help if NDDC did not accord the community its rightful place.
“The level of infrastructural decay in Aggah is horrible and we can no longer tolerate the pitiable situation”, he declared.
