CRSG Set To Employ 1,000 Teachers, 500 Security Men
Arrangement has beenconcluded by the Government of Cross River State to engage about 1,000 teachers and 500 security men in the services of the state so as to address the twin issues of dearth of teachers and insecurity faced by the state.
Chairman, State Universal Basic Education, Dr. Stephen Odey disclosed this to journalists at the weekend in Calabar while reacting to allegations that the state government was not doing enough to take a huge percentage of qualified graduates off the streets, stressing that the Prof Ben Ayade-led administration was poised to bring quality education, particularly in the basic education sector and beef up security in primary schools.
Odey stated that the recruitment of additional 1,000 teachers was going to complement the earlier approved 1,000, for which aptitude test was administered by the board in 2016 in the recruitment process to ensure that only those qualified for the job were engaged.
The board chairman said, “from what we experienced when we conducted our personnel audit and our subsequent visits to schools when we go for monitoring and inspections, we discovered that some schools from primary one to six have two or three teachers, which is unacceptable. For us to have qualitative and quality education, teachers are very key.
“Since we came on board from October, 2015 till now, we have recorded over a 1,000 retirements and death cases, so, we needed to replace these teachers. So, when I approached him on this, he graciously approved the recruitment of 2,000 teachers and 500 security men.
“Recall that in 2016 when we got the approval to recruit 1,000 teachers, we conducted aptitude test across the three senatorial districts of the state, but along the line, we couldn’t release the results because of the poor financial status of the state.
“So, we will give opportunities to those candidates that took the aptitude test, the results of those who scored 50 and above will be published soon. If they are not up to the two thousand we want to recruit then we can also consider others,” he stated.
