RIWAMA Cautions Against Indiscriminate Waste Disposal
The Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Bro. Felix Obuah has decried the indiscriminate dumping of refuse at the popular Oil Mill Flyover in Port Harcourt, the state capital, warning that anyone caught in the act would be arrested and prosecuted.
Obuah, who gave the warning while on an early morning routine sanitation monitoring exercise in some parts of Port Harcourt, last Saturday, warned managers of the Oil Mill Market to stop allocating roadside spaces for trading.
The RIWAMA boss said the warning became necessary because in course of their businesses, the traders litter the roads and even dispose their wastes indiscriminately, and outside the RIWAMA approved hours of 6pm to 12 midnight.
He further warned commercial vehicle operators and roadside artisans operating around the flyover to dump their wastes at the receptacles nearest to them, warning that Sanitation Marshalls and the newly inaugurated Task Force have been directed to monitor the roads and streets with a view to arresting and prosecuting those who engage in the unwholesome act, adding that to be forewarned is to be forearmed.
Obuah, who described the Oil Mill interchange as a significant landmark in Port Harcourt, lamented that the area would lose its appeal if these unwholesome acts were allowed to continue, but vowed that the agency would not hesitate to apprehend offenders.
The RIWAMA boss during the exercise reiterated the commitment of the agency to sustain the present neatness of Port Harcourt, the state capital and its environs, and solicited the cooperation of service providers to sustain the tempo.
