RSG Partners Civil Societies To End Drug Abuse
The Rivers State Government has declared its readiness to partner with civil society organisations to end all incidences of drug abuse in the state.
Commissioner for Health, Prof. Princewill Chike said this during a walk against drug abuse in Port Harcourt, organised by the Rivers State Chapter of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria in collaboration with Association of Hospital Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria, Rivers State.
The commissioner who was represented by a Director in the ministry, Mrs Ureh L. Peters said that the state government was ready to work with any group to end drug addiction in the society.
He described the incidence of drug abuse as a danger to the society, stressing that government would leave no stone unturned to bring the situation to an end, especially among the youths.
Meanwhile, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Rivers State had threatened to sanction any pharmacist who sells drugs without the doctor’s prescription.
Chairman of the society Mr, Wale Oladigbolu, who said this during the road walk also called on government to clamp down on all illegal drug sellers in the state.
He said that such action would enable the government to check the high rate of consumption of hand drugs by youths in the state.
He also warned against the incessant consumption of drugs such as, tramadol and codin, adding that the road walk was to sensitise the public on the dangers of hard drugs.
Also speaking, a representative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Francis Okogun, called on parents to always monitor the behaviour of their children and wards.
