‘FG’s Agric Policy’ll Create Jobs For Youth’
The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh has said that the Federal Government’s policy on agriculture would create jobs for youths in the country.
Boroh, who is also the Coordinator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), said this when he featured on newsmen platform Forum on Sunday in Abuja.
He said that the policy would also ensure food security as well as serve as a tool for reforming the country.
“The policy thrust of this administration is agriculture as a way first and foremost to revamp the economy and secondly to create job opportunities to ensure that there is abundance of food in our country.
“ And again these farm products definitely will be sold; it increases the financial capacity of individuals and the country as well. That’s why we are focusing on agriculture as an alternative to oil.
“Oil is still there but the information we received from the international community reveals that in the nearest future oil will not be as lucrative as it used to be.
“So there is a need to think otherwise and this otherwise thinking is focused on agriculture which I think is an alternative to oil.’’
He said that Nigeria would not be able to sustain her current levels of population and economic growth without enhancing the agricultural sector.
Boroh added that this informed the administration’s effort at engaging the youths in the Niger Delta region in agriculture as a way of diversification.
“Its a concern by the administration to ensure that youths are engaged all over the country, particularly for the amnesty programme. I am focusing on, in line with the strategic thinking plan of the administration on agriculture.
“Kindly speaking you can’t get it wrong if you go into agric irrespective of your field of study. Have a farm somewhere; you will be able to create jobs for the people in that environment where the farm is established.
“ You will also be able to ensure that food is surplus within that small environment where the farm is and then you will sell your farm products.
“Its a three in one game, creation of job, ensuring food is available and increase your financial position when you sell your farm products.
“ I think agric is just the only way if we take it serious, individually, collectively and as a nation. If we get it right in agriculture we will get it right in our development,’’ he said.
Boroh also said that the PAP was engaging ex-agitators on capacity development in the areas of skill acquisition, entrepreneurships and educational development.

FG, Ogun Distribute Inputs To 2,400 Farmers
Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, distributed farm inputs to farmers as part of effort to address food security challenge.
The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
Owotomo said: “Let us make good use of this opportunity, so that the success of this phase will make farmers benefit more from the state and federal governments of Nigeria.”
Earlier, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ayo-Ajayi, appreciated the present administration for partnering with the federal government for the initiative, adding that the programme is designed to support farmers at the grassroots level in cassava, rice and maize with inputs such as, seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, to boost their production and enhance their livelihood.
