Rivers NUJ Honours Late Journalists, Today …Marks World Press Freedom Day With Lectures

The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), will today, honour its late colleagues, who had paid the supreme sacrifice while performing their constitutional duties and responsibilities to society.
The NUJ said in a statement, yesterday, that it will use the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day celebrations to honour late journalists, who were either killed or maimed in the course of discharging their onerous duties.
It will also use the opportunity to host other events to mark the 2017 World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) with the theme, “Critical Minds For Critical Times: Media’s Role In Advancing Peaceful, Just And Inclusive Societies”.
In a statement signed by Secretary of the union, Soibi Max-Alalibo, the Chairman of the council, Mr. Omoni Ayo-Tamuno, called on members to attend en masse, noting that this is one of the most important days of journalists across the globe.
The event, billed to hold at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Moscow Road, today, will feature Dr. Ibituru Iwowari Pepple as guest lecturer, whose lecture is titled, “Freedom of Expression, Justice and the Rule of Law: Panacea to the Attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal 16”.
Chairman of the occasion is the Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic Media, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, while the special guest of honour is the state Commissioner of Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George.
The statement encouraged all heads of media organisations in the state and past NUJ chairmen in Rivers State to grace the occasion.
Every year, May 3, is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
The international day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation adopted at the 26th Session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.
This in turn was a response to a call by African journalists who in 1991 produced the landmark Windhoek Declaration on media pluralism and independence.
