Rivers Targets ICT-Based Economy
The Rivers state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, has stated that the foremost objective of the Governor Nyesom Wike administration is to transform Rivers state from a resource-based to a skill-based economy.
Briefing newsmen in his office as part of activities to mark the Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebration of Rivers State, the commissioner said the target of the new economic policy in the state was to build sustainable human capacity based on ICT competence.
He said ICT has been imbibed in the school curriculum of the state as all major schools across the three senatorial zones have been reconstructed and equipped with ICT facilities.
The commissioner explained that young people were the key targets of the economic transformation policy in the state; adding that over 22,000 youth that embraced the state government’s Amnesty offer would benefit from vocational rehabilitation to integrate them back to society.
Commenting on the achievements of Governor Nyesom Wike in the state, the commissioner disclosed that the governor has made remarkable impact in the development of all sectors of the economy.
He highlighted some of the developmental strides of the governor to include; payment of arrears of salary of civil servants, reconstruction of 13 general hospitals, release of N500 million grant to private medical practitioners for effective service delivery, release of $4 million for purchase of special equipment at the Braithwaite memorial Special Hospital (BMSH), building of new Nigerian bar Association (NBA) Centre in Port Harcourt, massive road construction across the state, and release of N2 billion loan to 35 beneficiaries for enterprise development, among several other projects.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
