DPR To Begin Clampdown On Illegal LPG Dealers, Jan
Beginning from January
2017, the Department of Petroleum Resoruces (DPR) says it will commence a clampdown process on non-registered Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) retailers in both Lagos and Ogun States.
The zonal officer, Gas, of DPR, Mr. Ekitudo Williams, who sent out the warning order, said the agency will start a holistic implementation of necessary laws regulating the LPG business and vowed to shut down all unlicensed outlets and also arrest and prosecute the illegal operators.
The DPR official stated this at a safety training workshop organised by the Liquefied Petroleubranch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Lagos State branch.
He said the impending action had officially been conveyed to LPGAR-NUPENG leaders by DPR on October 31, 2016.
According to him, “Unlicensed gas retailers are liable to arrest, prosecution, closure of their gas shops or other retailing outlets and other punitive actions as considered appropriate by DPR”.
He noted that DPR had exercised patience for years on the matter and appealed to retailers to comply with the laws.
He alleged that LPGAR-NUPENG had for years encouraged its members to apply for license using its mechanism, but that many refused to comply.
“LPGAR can no longer protect any retailer who refused to abide by the rules and regulations governing cooking gas retailing business as set by DPR.
“You are expected to have one shop-on license, as a matter of urgency to observe and put in place license two fire extinguishers (liquid and powder of at least 5kg each), well ventilated shop, distance from fire sources, display or appropriate warning signs and emergency number, LPG training certificate of sector’s valid seminar certificate”.
At the workshop with the theme, LPG Retailing: The Safety Watch in Lagos, LPGAR-NUPENG urged members to be more safety conscious in operating their business.
