As reactions continue to trail the smashing of a fake electoral materials printing syndicate in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State House of Assembly, yesterday, unanimously condemned the incident, calling on the National Assembly to constitute a panel to probe the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC) over the matter.
Rising from it’s plenary session presided by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adams Dabotorubima , the House requested the National Assembly to urgently institute the probe in consonance with sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution which empower it to do so.
The resolution of the 8th Assembly followed a motion moved by the member representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency 1, Hon. Christian Ahiakwu, and supported by his Oyigbo Countpart, Hon. Chisom Promise Dike, at the plenary session. The Assembly insisted that the Police must depolitize the issue and carry-out thorough investigation to unravel the truth behind the incident.
The Assembly also called on the Rivers State Government to speedily ascertain the true status of the building housing the said printing press, whether it was for commercial or residential purpose.
Briefing newsmen immediately after the plenary session, the Chairman, House Committee on information and training, Hon. Samuel Ogeh, challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to do justice on the alleged printers of the fake electoral materials in Port Harcourt, if his administration was truly fighting corruption in the country.
According to the Assembly spokesman, the arrest of the fake printers of the rerun elections result sheets has shown that the electoral body was not sincere to conduct a fair and free election in the state.
Ogeh called on the Police and National Assembly to properly investigate the incident to give all political parties benefit of the doubts in the forthcoming re-run election in the state.
The Assembly Image maker also said that on no account should the matter be swept under the carpet by the Police or the Federal Government, if Nigerias must have trust on INEC and the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Ogeh further insisted that any person or group of persons involved in the Printing of the fake electoral materials must be prosecuted and punished in accordance with the law.
