I will like to salute the bravery and courage of the Nigerian Forces in the fight against Boko Haram. I will be visiting the headquarters of the Multi-National Joint Task Force in Ndjamena which is also headed by a Nigerian General, to see how things are going and can be improved upon”.
Le Adrain said, “The fight against the barbaric organization, Boko Haram in Nigeria, is the same fight that we have in France because these terrorist groups that are hitting Nigeria are the same that we have in France.
“The second phase that we are looking into in this cooperation is about maritime insecurity. We are extremely happy to help Nigeria in this, which is going to be a much longer term effort in order to guarantee security in the Gulf of Guinea,” he said.
In his address, the Minister of Defence, Mansur Mohammed Dan-Ali, said the visit of the French minister has made a very big impact on the country’s defence cooperation with France.
“If you remember our president was in Paris, and he also went to all our neighbouring countries of Niger, Chad, Cameroon, this is to strengthen cooperation between us and our neighbouring countries; and France has a great influence on these countries, and that is why we are looking forward to a fruitful defence relations with France.
“Nigeria will benefit in the sense that as we are fighting terrorism in connection with France and other neighbouring countries, it will give us an impact in controlling or ending terrorism within our sub-region and the world at large”.
On the role of France, he said, “Of course, the cooperation with France will help in mobilizing more support from Francophone West African countries. You will also recall that we have the Multi-National Joint Task Force, and it is being sponsored by the neighbouring countries of Chad, Niger, Cameroon, Benin and other countries in the region.
“France has great influence on these countries, and it has a big impact on what we are doing in this region. Remember that Lake Chad is a strong agricultural belt in the region that our people depend on for their livelihood in farming, fishing and other business ventures. I am assuring you that the new France-Nigeria defence cooperation would help to address some of the issues in the Chad basin,” he added.

United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has charged Nigeria with spearheading Africa’s quest for a restructured global order, describing the country as uniquely positioned to lead the continent toward superpower status.

Guterres, who backed Nigeria’s bid for the world body’s security council seat, also praised the economic reforms of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration as well as Nigeria’s leadership in stabilising the Sahel and ECOWAS regions, despite facing its own security challenges.

The UN scribe made the remarks last Friday night during a high-level bilateral meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima on the sidelines of the 39th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Speaking during the meeting, Guterres said Nigeria’s large population, sustained democratic governance, vast natural and human resources, and longstanding commitment to multilateralism placed it in a unique position to lead Africa in the evolving global order.

“Given Nigeria’s demographic strength, democratic continuity and deep resource base, the country stands a real chance of leading Africa to becoming the next superpower in the evolving global architecture,” he said.

The UN Secretary-General and the vice president discussed key developments in Nigeria and the country’s expanding leadership role in promoting regional stability across West Africa and the Sahel.

Guterres commended the remarkable and outstanding reforms of the administration of President Tinubu, noting that Nigeria’s bold economic restructuring and security commitments have strengthened its continental standing.

The meeting focused on strengthening Nigeria–UN collaboration to advance global economic growth, peace and security, sustainable development, and a coordinated humanitarian response across Africa.

In his remarks, Shettima thanked the UN Secretary-General for his leadership in advancing global peace, noting that Africa has benefited immensely from his tenure, even as the United Nations undergoes internal restructuring.

“We remain committed to multilateralism and to deepening our partnerships with the United Nations and other global institutions,” the vice president said.

Shettima also reiterated Nigeria’s longstanding call for comprehensive reform of the United Nations system to reflect evolving global realities.

He emphasised that Africa must have stronger representation in global decision-making structures and declared that Nigeria deserves a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Both leaders pledged to deepen cooperation, with Guterres reaffirming the UN’s support for Nigeria’s reform agenda and its growing leadership role in advancing peace, security, and development across Africa.
