Operation Zero PotHole: Diobu Residents Laud Wike … As Contractor Works 24 Hrs
Residents and road users in Diobu axis of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, have lauded the on-going ‘operation zero pothole’ flagged off on May 29, 2015 by the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.
The Tide reports that the impact of the project could be felt in the area due to the increased pace of work by the contractor handling the Diobu axis of the project, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
Speaking with The Tide while conducting newsmen round the projct sites in Diobu, on wenesday, the CCECC Public relations Officer (PRO) on operation Zero Pothole project, Robsn Ndiokho, said that the positive impact recorded on the project was occasioned by the 24 hours intensive work drive to meet the people’s aspiration and the state governments determined efforts to end potholes in the state.
A resident of Azikiwe Street in Diobu, Mrs Nyemachi Wobo, who spoke to The Tide, expressed happiness on the success recorded on the job so far by the CCECC in this regard, saying that “we are happy with Governor Wike for this people-oriented gesture to remember our street and the most neglected area of Port Harcourt called Diobu, it is a thing of joy”.
She commended the Chinese Company, CCECC, for doing a good job, especially opening up drainages (gutters) that have been blocked over the years.
A printing press operator at Ojoto street, Elder Godwin Nelson, lauded Governor Wike for the roads rehabilitation initiative, noting that with this gesture Wike has shown concern over the plight and expectations of the inhabilitants of Diobu.
“Customers can now drive to almost all printing press offices, as CCECC works were day and night to meet the target”, he added.
A student of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Noami Jaja expressed satisfaction on the good job done by CCECC on the poor drainage system along the street leading to the University back gate, saying “this RSUST back gate used to be flooded whenever heavy rains fall, but now CCECC has corrected the poor drainage system and the say God bless governor of the people, Chief Wike, for remembering the street”.

Senate Orders NAFDAC To Ban Sachet Alcohol Production by December 2025 ………Lawmakers Warn of Health Crisis, Youth Addiction And Social Disorder From Cheap Liquor
The upper chamber’s resolution followed an exhaustive debate on a motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South), during its sitting, last Thursday.
He warned that another extension would amount to a betrayal of public trust and a violation of Nigeria’s commitment to global health standards.
Ekpenyong said, “The harmful practice of putting alcohol in sachets makes it as easy to consume as sweets, even for children.
“It promotes addiction, impairs cognitive and psychomotor development and contributes to domestic violence, road accidents and other social vices.”
Senator Anthony Ani (Ebonyi South) said sachet-packaged alcohol had become a menace in communities and schools.
“These drinks are cheap, potent and easily accessible to minors. Every day we delay this ban, we endanger our children and destroy more futures,” he said.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, ruled in favour of the motion after what he described as a “sober and urgent debate”.
Akpabio said “Any motion that concerns saving lives is urgent. If we don’t stop this extension, more Nigerians, especially the youth, will continue to be harmed. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has spoken: by December 2025, sachet alcohol must become history.”
According to him, “This is not just about alcohol regulation. It is about safeguarding the mental and physical health of our people, protecting our children, and preserving the future of this nation.
“We cannot allow sachet alcohol to keep destroying lives under the guise of business.”
