Flood Alert: RSG Plans Permanent IDPs Camps
The Rivers State Govern
ment has disclosed plan to build a permanent camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in flood-prone areas of the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties, Mrs Ibaniba Briggs-Iti who disclosed this at a sensitisation progamme at the Port Harcourt City Council, said that the proposed camp which will comprises twin storey building would have the capacity to accommodate over 1500 persons.
Mrs Iti said that the proposed camps were for victims of flood disasters in the state, stressing that the sensitization programme was to prepare the people in flood prone areas on the impending flood disaster.
According to the Permanent Secretary, the impacts of the flooding can be mitigated if adequate preparations are made stressing that the state Government is doing everything to ensure that people in the flash point areas are not adversely affected by the incident.
She also used the occasion to call on the people to desist from dumping refuse into the gutters and ensure the free flow of water. She commended the people for coming out enmass for the programme.
Also speaking, the state Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mr Oliver Wollugbom described the programme as timely as it would help people in the rural communities to keep their environment clean.
Mr Wollugbom also urged for dredging of rivers and channels to ensure the free flow of water.
Also speaking, the chairman caretaker committee of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, Mr Clifford Oparaodu said that the council would demolish all structures built on water right of ways.
Mr Oparaodu also warned against further dumping of refuse in gutters and drainages and commended the state government for steps taken so far towards the rehabilitation of victims of the flood prone areas.
