Fuel Scarcity Hampers Vehicle Importation At Lagos Port
The RORO Terminal at Tin
Can Island Port in Lagos which handle both new and used imported vehicles has been experiencing slow operations due to the lingering fuel scarcity in some ports of the country.
A source told our correspondent that in the last few weeks, the importation of both new and used vehicles otherwise known as ‘Tokumbo Cars’ had dropped drastically at the two terminals at Tin Can Island Port, as a result of the fuel scarcity.
The source said some vehicles that are supposed to leave the terminals after all necessary clearance procedures are still trapped as the importers could not procure fuel with which to drive the cars away to their car stands.
It was also learnt that due to the non-availability of the petroleum products, there has been a drop in vehicles transfer from the fuel star logistics and Ports and Terminal Multiservice Limited (PTML) otherwise known as RORO Terminals in the past few weeks.
The source said, with the development, the Port is likely to experience congestion as there has been no solution in sight.
Our correspondent gathered that some imported vehicles have no fuel in some imported vehicles in them on their arrival at the Ports, and there is no way the importers could move the vehicles out of the Ports and are thereby likely to cause serious Port congestion.
Taiwo Olarinwaju, whose car stand is at Oshodi Expressway also lamented that government should immediately resolve the lingering crisis between the oil marketers and the various arms involved in ensuring availability of fuel in the state, so as to alleviate the untold suffering of the masses.
According to Olarinwaju, the fuel scarcity is affecting the sale of vehicles because customers are afraid of having a problem of driving off the vehicle after purchase, and further called on the government to come to their aid.
It would be recalled that there has been fuel scarcity in the country for the one month and it is affecting all sectors of the economy in the country.
