Co-operative Union Wants PPP In Transport Sector
The President, Rivers
Transport and Investment Co-operative Union Ltd, Mr Tubonemi Michael Wokoma has called for a public – private partnership (PPP) in the transport sector in the state.
Wokoma, who made the call during an interview with our correspondent in his office in Port Harcourt, on Monday, noted that with such partnership, there would be discipline in the sector and commuters would enjoy their money’s worth.
He said the call became necessary in order to see the state ministry of Transport and the private transport sectors come together and formulate policies that would stop indiscriminate extortion of money from self employed drivers and other road users as well as improve the activities of road transporters.
“It is high time the government began to see how the ministry of transport can form an independent transport company owners and self-employed transporters to look into activities of the commercial road transport sector that will bring decency in the operation of road transportation in the state,” he stressed.
According to him, a lot of indiscipline had plagued the transport sector as commuters are not enjoying their money, they were being parked in scrapped vehicles like sardines, illegal taskforces who arrest, prosecute and collect fine from drivers without taking such offender to the appropriate court, pointing out that there is no law in Nigeria empowering such illegal body to carry out such duties with impunity.
The president reiterated that illegal activities on the road transport sector in the state is uncalled for and displaced priority and said it must stop for the interest of the state and its motoring public with the formation of the public private partnership, through independent transport commission that would comprise both transport owners and self-employed commercial transport operators in the state.
“Looking at the transport sector today, you can see that it looks horrible for real investors who are willing to invest to come in, because the government and private vehicle owners are supposed to liaise together for a better system of road transportation for the interest of the state,” he posited.
