NDE Disburses Loan To 100 Petty Traders In Enugu
The National Direc
torate of Employment (NDE) in Enugu State has disbursed microcredit of N20, 000 each to 100 petty traders in the state.
Distributing the loans in Enugu, the Coordinator of the directorate, Mr Joseph Iroegbu, said the loans were expected to be repaid within 18 months with a 9 per cent interest of N1,800.
According to him, the loan will go a long way in assisting the beneficiaries to improve their businesses and earn a better living.
The coordinator listed beneficiaries of the loan to include grocers, tailors, recharge card sellers as well as hair dressers from Enugu urban.
“We want to put smiles on faces of people in the informal sector to make them enterprising and self-reliant.
Iroegbu advised the beneficiaries to repay the loan and the interest at the appropriate time, adding that there would be better packages for people that refunded theirs as at when due.
“In the past, people did not repay their loans but this time around, I want to recover every kobo that we are giving out.
The Head of Department, Small Scale Enterprise of the directorate, Mrs Getrude Onyeji, who addressed the beneficiaries, said the repayment of the loans would end by July 2015.
Onyeji said that each beneficiary was expected to return N1, 500 every month to the directorate to enable them meet up with the repayment of the loan.
Some of the beneficiaries commended the Federal Government and the directorate for the loan, and promised to pay back at the appropriate time.
Mrs Josephine Igwe expressed happiness over the loan, saying that it would boost her business and payment of her children’s school fees.
“I am very happy for this loan. I thank the NDE because I have been praying to God for help of this nature,’’ she said.
Another beneficiary, Mr Ifeanyi Ukoh, who thanked the government for its gesture, urged it to make the loan interest-free.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
