Harmattan: NEMA Cautions Against Bush Burning
The Head of
Operation, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Gombe State, Mr Apollos Jediel, last Thursday, cautioned the public, especially farmers, against bush burning to prevent fire disaster.
Jediel gave the advice during a sensitisation rally jointly organised by the agency’s Management Vanguard Group of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Red Cross, for traders in the state.
He said that farmers had recorded a bumper harvest this season and that if they engage in bush burning, the produce would be destroyed.
According to him, the harmattan season is usually characterised by fire incidence of different nature, hence the need for people, especially farmers, to be cautious of the way they handled fire.
“We are experiencing bumper harvest this 2013 and you find out that the farmers are putting fire seeking for rats and rabbits.
“It is imperative that we discourage farmers from bush burning in the process of hunting for rats and rabbits this harmattan period.’’
He commended the corps members for organising the rally to educate the public on the dangers of fire outbreaks.
In his address, Principal Fire Officer of the Department of Fire Service in the state, Mr. Haruna Mamman, enjoined the public to guard against activities that could cause fire disaster.
He said lives and property worth millions of naira had been lost to fire due to negligence, warning the people to take measures against it.
The Chairman, Traders Association of Nigeria in the state, Alhaji Dayyabu Hashim, said the rally would help in enlightening their members on fire safety measures.
He commended the corps members for the programme and promised that the participants would share the message with other traders.
President of Red Cross/NEMA Emergency Management Vanguard group of the NYSC, Mr. Andema Philip, said the campaign was targeted at shop owners and market men and women.
Our correspondent reports that the theme of the campaign is; “Market Fire and Safety Techniques.”
