Community Protests Dredging Activities By Firm
Protesters from Dumo Ama Community in the Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, have blocked the site of M/S Roudo Nigeria Limited over fears of a possible submergence of the community following the dredging activities of the company in the area.
The protesters marched round the site with placards that read; “Save Dumo Ama from submergence”, ‘We need development not destruction’, ‘MS Roudo Limited dredging company sinks Dumo Ama into the sea” amongst others.
Addressing newsmen during the protest, the Chairman, Dumo Ama Community Development Committee (CDC), Elder Dennis George said that the company’s dredging activities in the area were being carried out without an environmental impact assessment.
“As we write, dredging work is still going on non-stop in every water front, already some building structures have shown signs of cracks and the community might eventually be submerged over time”, he said.
He said that a petition to this effect has already been sent to both the state and federal agencies in charge of environment for them to call M/S Roudo Nigeria Limited to order, adding that the company has also rebuffed all moves by the community for a peaceful resolution of the matter.
“We have made painstaking efforts to get the dispute resolved peacefully and amicably but to no avail. We are afraid that if nothing positive is done and very urgently too, the situation would continue to aggravate and degenerate into an unimaginable proportion and unpleasant consequences which no amount of money can compensate”, he said.
Elder George also disclosed that apart from the protest, the community is also considering taking the company to court with a view to resolving the problem.
Also speaking, the women leader of the community, Lucy Karibo George said that the company must accede to the request of the community.
She also warned that sand from Dumo Ama must not be taken and given to other neighbouring communities.
The protesters later marched to the palace of the Amanyanabo of Ogoloma where a copy of the petition was handed over to the king.
When contacted, the state Commissioner for Envrionment, Dr. Nyema Weli denied knowledge of the petition.
