Assembly Tasks Ministry On Job Creation
The Ondo State House of Assembly Committee on Labour and Productivity on Monday called on the state Ministry of Labour and Productivity to create more jobs for youths in the state.
Mr Victor Akinwe, the Chairman of the Committee, made the call when he led members of the committee on oversight function to the ministry in Akure.
Akinwe said the ministry was a major stakeholder in finding solution to unemployment by creating various jobs opportunities and training of teeming youths.
The chairman also advised the ministry to revive some moribund industries, to create more jobs for the people.
He urged the ministry to involve the committee in its activities of curbing unemployment to the barest minimum.
He promised that the committee would cooperate with the ministry by approving its 2013 budget.
Contributing, Mr Bamidele Oleyelogun, Vice Chairman of the Committee, expressed dissatisfaction with the “not-too encouraging implementation of Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme” in the state.
Oleyelogun said that SURE-P, being a Federal Government programme, was aimed at alleviating unemployment in the country.
He urged the coordinators of the programme in the state not to play politics in implementing it.
Oloyelogun, therefore, urged the ministry to list the groups that had benefited from the programme in each local government area with their names, locations and mobile phone numbers for verification. Responding, the Commissioner of the ministry, Mr Deji Iroju, commended the lawmakers for the visit.
He said the ministry was created by the administration of Gov. Olusegun Mimiko to create jobs for the people.
Iroju said the ministry had embarked on employment drive by partnering with Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, to create jobs through ICT programme.
According to him, the ministry has so far provided more than 8,000 different jobs to the people in the state.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
