‘Publish Or Perish’: The Academic Consciousness
Publishing in the academic world is very important; it is the first thing on the priority list for students and academics; everyone is expected to work very hard. Everyone must have an objective guiding him in conducting a research work; a finding which is the outcome of the work; a recommendation for the target audience and conclusion to knit all the relevant points together. It is through hard and original work that everyone brings in knowledge to his field of specialization making it develop. Academics hinder the growth of knowledge when original works are not done to promote knowledge. The disadvantages are two-fold: there will be no new discoveries in arts and science; individual scholars will not progress; they either publish or perish. The necessity has bred different attitudes.
It is necessary to discuss the positive attitude to publishing. Most scholars publish to inform readers the latest development in their fields or their own discoveries. There is always a progressive apprehension of reality in every field. For instance in the field of drama the genre started with singing to the God of Bacchus until dialogue, characterisation and other elements were added. The genre developed until classical drama was established. It may be necessary to narrow the example to tragedy. This form is about a very important man who rises to prominence and fails because of a flaw in his life. There has been several publications on this and the progress of the form; the tragedy of a middle man who suffers psychologically and fails to achieve his aim as Willy Loman in Miller’s Death of A Salesman. It has come to be established that tragedy happens to everyone – high or low, rich or poor. Scholars have researched into tragedy. An example is Nietsche’s Death of Tragedy which charts its development, height of classical tragedy and types of tragedy.
Many inventions have been done in science. One will cite few examples to show the increase in knowledge in the area without which humans would have been incapacitated in so many things. One example is electricity. It has a long history of development with different phases of invention of the various components which have become electricity today. It started several centuries before Michael Faraday made his own contribution. He has been wrongly described as the father of electricity. People from Greece had earlier developed an aspect of electricity; it was erroneous to describe Faraday as the father of electricity much later. Research helps to reveal the current state of a field; errors made and corrected as well as progress in the area. Publishing is essential in every field of knowledge that is why it is often said ‘publish or perish’. This consciousness has always been with us and has driven us in various ways.
Must scholars publish or perish? Is publishing a good habit which all scholars should develop? What happens to those who are not talented or those who have not fully developed the art? These are fundamental questions for scholars and critics. The positive attitude has produced good works which have assisted humans. Medical science today is grappling with AIDS or HIV. Malaria is a disease treated easily today because so much research has been done in the area. Tuberculosis was a dreaded disease without cure; it was dreaded like AIDS or HIV in the time of John Keats in Britain; it was the disease that killed the poet when he was still very young. It has been conquered. Research is important and its findings. Publishing is mandatory for development.
Good and trained researchers do not find the work of research impossible or compelling. They have come to make it a habit over the years. This habitual action drives them on to fruitfulness with endless results of development. They produce original works which are not poor copies of originals; they enrich humanity, prolong the lives of humans, offer them satisfaction and joy. It is from this perspective that publishing is delightful than cumbersome work to do; a situation which some persons have found themselves accidentally involved.
The consciousness of perishing is pathetic pitted against striving without talents, abilities and training. There are persons who find themselves in this camp struggling to produce papers or articles – what else than work for salaries they do not want to miss. I was engaged in conversation with a member of staff on the topic of publishing about two years ago; she said a student copied from a project in course of writing his long essay; he did not know it would be discovered. A young lecturer hijacked someone’s work and published it on a website; it was discovered. These are few instances of cheating. There are many more examples in many countries in the world.
Publishing is very important as well as research oriented works. It is necessary to note that the saying ‘publish or perish’ has been borne out of the two psychological worlds of scholars and critics – the talented and result oriented ones and the strugglers to keep their salaries. The latter group may re-consider leaving the field than stealing ideas in different forms; it is dangerous and a negation of modelling. It also makes different fields of specialization barren. Publishing will always remain useful to humanity as long as original discoveries and contributions are made to promote various human conditions. It is from this perspective that we publish to live long and enjoy new findings in various fields.
