Striking FCE Lecturers Resume Work
Striking lecturers of the
Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, Lagos, last Tuesday returned to work.
The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) had on September 10, directed its members across the country to embark on a seven-day warning strike to press home its demands.
The union is also calling for the full implementation of the 2010 White Paper on the Presidential Visitation Panels to the Federal Colleges of Education among other demands.
The Chairman of COEASU in the institution, Mr Olayanju Abolaji, confirmed to newsmen that the lecturers had reported at their duty posts.
“Lecturers have returned to work and we are even having a teaching practice orientation with year three students,’’ he said.
Abolaji said the strike had some impact as the Federal Government had called the national executive committee of COEASU to a meeting which would be held before the end of the week.
The fact that the government called the union to a meeting gives us the hope of getting a positive response from them, he said, adding that, if the government’s response turns out to be unfavourable then, we shall down tools and resume strike.’’
Abolaji urged the government to continue to give education sector a priority attention as the nation’s future.
Our correspondent reports that few students, who were on the campus, said they had come for an orientation exercise ahead of their teaching practice.
A 300 level student in the Department of Computer Science,Miss Uche Matthew, said although the school was on break, some of us are in school for orientation.’
