Happy Eid el Fitri Celebrations
Muslims in Nigeria yesterday joined Islamic faithful all over the world to commemorate one of the most important pillars of the faith – Eid el Fitri. It follows the Moslem Ramadan fast that entails self-deprivation, abstinence from worldly pleasures and indeed dedication to prayers.
The Tide joins the Muslim community in the celebration’s of this epoch and prays that the lessons learnt from the Ramadan would be positively employed, for the betterment of mankind, sustenance of global peace and indeed religious tolerance.
It is a known fact that Islam is today facing some of the biggest challenges on account of the activities of a few ill-advised extremists who seem bent on re-writing the Holy Quran to suit their whims and unavoidable hate campaigns.
Chairman of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar made the some point when, last week, he said Islam is not a violent religion as some were trying to portray it. In fact, Islam he said, emphasises love, tolerance, piety, peace and indeed reverence of the Maker. These indeed are the same key attributes needed for positive living that both Muslims and Christians alike, must imbibe for the betterment of society.
In fact they, imperative most at this time of our national life, when, faith-based hate, religious intolerance, terrorists’ activities, violent crimes, and indeed insecurity pose a serious challenge to the very fabric of our nationality as Nigerians under one Supreme being known to Islam as Allah and to Christianity as God.
The Tide expects Muslims to reflect deeply on the imperatives that bond us as one people and work towards addressing those things that near-frequently threaten our unity, even in diversity.
Muslims and Christians alike must accept, as a fact that a religion is good only when it makes men and women to be good, and strive at all times, to emphasis the basic attributes of love, tolerance and inter-religious understanding and peace.
By its nature, the Ramadan period should have provided the Muslim faithful enough opportunity to reflect on the state of the nation necessary to ignite prayers for peace, unity and progress of the nation. We expect the Muslim faithful to extend the rewards of the period in piety to the larger society and that way, encourage better living among the populace.
Together with Christians and others to from various persuasions, Muslims must use the period to partner the federal government and security agencies to fight crime, insecurity and terrorism, by preaching against the tendency of violence among their flock.
All must realize that the stream of violent killings being orchestrated in parts of the North are neither in support of Islam nor Christianity, but strictly an attack against humanity, which both religions abhor.
Therefore, all Nigerians must unite against what is indeed a common enemy, which terror today typifies. There are without doubt, veiled attempts by the terror groups to incite religious hatred, by presenting hatred and disunity. But it will require positive resistance by all to ensure peace.
Now, is the best time for all Nigerians to unite against the divisive tendencies because Muslims and Christians alike, have a lot more to gain from a united Nigeria, than a divided one. It is only when, all Nigerians, devoid of religion and ethnicity accept therefore this and seek to internalize and protect same that they can defend, with equal commitment, the unity and security of the country.
More importantly the political class must eschew acts capable of heating up the polity or making unguarded comments that could fuel inter-religious and multi-ethnic divides, for their own selfish political ends. Nigeria, it must be restated, is bigger than any individual’s personal ambition and therefore, should not allow such to threaten the corporate existence of the nation.
However, it must be stated that Peace and Unity do not exist in a vacuum. Justice, equity, tolerance and the rule of law must take root if democracy must be sustained. It is indeed where, these are lacking that many go to extremes to vent their anger on society and the polity.
Now, therefore, is the most auspicious moment- the festival of Eid el Fitri to reflect very deeply on these imperatives for communality, Unity and Peace of Nigeria. And reflect Nigerians must.
The Tide wishes all Nigerians Barka de Sallah.
