Council Bans Bush Burning
The Igbo Ehti Local Government legislative council has passed a bylaw to end indiscriminate bush burning in the area.
The Leader of the council, Mr Titus Ali, told newsmen in Enugu that the ban was to forestall damages to lives and properties.
Ali said that neighbourhood security groups in the area had been found to be conniving with hunters in the act.
“It has been observed with great dismay that if these nefarious activities perpetrated by hunters in our council area are not checked, it will escalate to the loss of lives and properties that are worth millions of naira in the future.
“Thus, the legislative council finds it timely to pass this all-important bill to checkmate the heinous act of these desperate hunters and to forestall the breakdown of law and order in the council area.”
Ali said the council had also passed another bylaw prohibiting the use of motorcycles from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. He said the law was also timely and crucial to the internal security of lives and properties in the council area.
He said that the law was intended to curb the activities of hoodlums who hid under the guise of motorcycle riding to perpetrate crimes. Ali said the council found it imperative to pass the bill to check the ugly trend, which he noted, was hampering the security of lives and properties in the area.
He recalled that the state assembly recently passed a motion banning the use of motorcycles in the three metropolitan council areas in Enugu city.
“But for us in our council area, we were conscious of the fact that we were not among the three metropolitan council areas but our concern is to prevent these motorcycle operators from exceeding our time limit.”
