Director Scores Agric Transformation Agenda High
The Director, Plateau Field Station, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Daniel Kakwi, Tuesday said that the Federal Government’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda was transforming the sector.
Kakwi told newsmen in Jos that the agenda was already turning the face of the agriculture sector through public-private partnership.
He said that 20 million tonnes of food was projected to be added to the country’s domestic food supply in 2015 in order to ensure national food security.
“When the agriculture transformation agenda was introduced, we informed the country that we will add 20 million tonnes of food to our domestic food supply by 2015.
“Today, I am happy to tell you that from our efforts this year alone, we are adding 8.1 million tonnes of food such as maize, rice, cassava, and sorghum.
“That is 41 per cent of the total target achieved in the first year. We will continue to work hard,’’ the director said.
Kakwi explained that the ministry, in partnership with state governments, had been working hard to raise food production.
He said that since the roll out of the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) in June, 1.2 million farmers had been reached with improved seeds and fertiliser, using the e-wallet system.
According to him, 67,000 tonnes of maize seeds have been distributed to farmers across the country.
He noted that the seedlings were planted on 3.5 million hectares of land with estimated production of seven million tonnes of food.
As part of measures to encourage commercial agriculture, Kakwi said that the ministry had provided free cotton seeds for farmers across the Northern states.
He said that the ministry targeted to plant 75,000 hectares of cotton this year.
“We are currently distributing free 30 million cassava stems and 114 million cocoa seedlings to farmers.
“Also being distributed is nine million oil palm seedlings to revamp our oil production.
“The Federal Government has strongly supported the farmers overtime and it will continue to do so through its transformation agenda.
“As the government deals with the issue of flood, we must remember that the Agricultural Transformation Agenda is working; and working very well,’’ he said.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
