Chime Hails ICAN’s Capacity Building Initiative
The Governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, has described
capacity building as bedrock that promotes efficient and effective production
and service delivery in the civil service.
The Governor was speaking through the state Head of Service,
Nze Dennis Eze when the president and some members of the Institute of
Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), Mr. Adedoyin Idowu Owolabi, paid a
courtesy call at the Government House, Enugu.
Governor Chime commended the Institute for its programme on
capacity building for its members, adding that it is in line with the state
government’s constant training and retraining of civil servants to enhance
service delivery.
The Governor noted that the issue of unemployment is a
global one but said that the state government has lifted embargo on employment,
assuring that soon employment activities would commence to reduce unemployment
in the state.
He recalled that the state has employed a good number of
staff in the school system to facilitate teaching and learning.
Governor Chime also commended members of ICAN in the state
serving in his administration for their dedication and hard work, adding that
he is proud of them.
Earlier in an address, the President of ICAN, Mr. Owolabi said that the Institute held Enugu District of ICAN in a special place in their evolution because it was the first to be created outside Lagos by ICAN Council after obtaining its charter in 1965.
He noted that he was in Enugu to interact with members with
a view to obtaining information about their welfare, challenges and value
creating activities in the state.
The ICAN President noted that the visit would also afford
him the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with stakeholders accounting
services with a view to ascertaining their peculiar needs and challenges.
According to him, the visit would further enable him assess
how well his members have been supporting the state government inline with the
public interest mandate of the Accounting Profession.
Owolabi used the forum to commend Governor Chime for the
opportunity given to members of the institute to serve at the various
capacities in his administration including the Chief of Staff to the Governor,
the Chairman Board of Internal Revenue and his Senior Special Assistant on
Revenue Generation, among others.
He, therefore, appealed to the Governor for his supports for
members to attend training programmes to meet their professional obligations
which will enable them earn the requisite Mandatory Continuing Professional
Education (MCPE) credit hours.
The ICAN President equally used the occasion to appreciate
Governor Chime’s support to the institute, especially by fulfilling his promise
to allocate a piece of land for the building of its regional office for the South
East.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
