Amaechi Reaffirms Commitment To People Oriented Projects
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, says his administration is committed to delivering people-oriented projects that touch the lives of the citizenry.
Governor Amaechi said this yesterday when the secretariat of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) led by its Director-General, Dr Ashishana Okauru, visited him in Government House, Port Harcourt.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi stated that good governance had been the focus of his administration since inception, adding that “good governance is at the heart of whatever projects we are embarking on,” pointing out that projects embarked on by the government “are projects that have direct impact and benefits to the people”.
“What guides our decisions of what projects to embark on is purely what the people will benefit from the projects,” Governor Amaechi, who is also Chairman of the Forum, explained, stressing that “the days of elephant projects are gone in Rivers State and I do not expect any government to continue with elephant projects,” enjoining policy makers and implementors to focus on projects that are “well-thought-out and how such projects will touch the lives of the citizenry”.
The state chief executive noted that the state government embarked on building of primary schools because of the challenges experienced in the militancy days in the Niger Delta region, adding that the idea was to provide better and solid foundation for primary school pupils and refocus their mindset.
Earlier, the Director-General of the NGF, Dr Okauru had said the NGF secretariat was in the state to start the peer review exercise, explaining that the forum was focused on good governance and constitutional amendment in a manner that would properly protect federalism.
Dr Okauru recalled that the exercise, which started under the leadership of Dr Bukola Saraki, former Governor of Kwara State and immediate past chairman of the NGF, was the outcome of an agreement by the 36 state governors with emphasis on good governance, which is also the priority of the present chairman, Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
The team, which later met with top government functionaries in the state at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Port Harcourt, had earlier visited Anambra, Niger and Ekiti States where the peer review exercise had been carried out. The team plans to visit Lagos and Akwa Ibom States.
