APM Terminals PlansTo Increase Scanned Cargoes
APM Terminals Apapa Ltd. said it was working to increase the number of containers passing through the scanners for higher cargo throughput at seaports.
The company’s Media Adviser, Mr Bolaji Akinola, said this in a statement issued in Lagos.
The statement said that the firm “hopes to see a further reduction in physical examination of cargoes”, stressing that physical examination was cumbersome for all the parties involved.
It said that reduction in physical examination of goods, increased examination by scanners and higher revenues to the Federal Government would be sustained for expected growth.
The statement said the company intended to increase its scanning capacity by 50 per cent with the co-operation of the Nigeria Customs Service and the service provider, Cotecna Destination Inspection Ltd.
“If a decrease in physical examination is achieved, there will be substantial increase in volume of cargoes in 2012.
“There has been a significant rise in Federal Government’s revenue from the Apapa Command since APM Terminals first took over the logistics for the scanning process.
“APM Terminals has also aligned its tariff to reflect the cost of examination process in which scanning is more cost-effective,’’ the statement said.
It said that the terminal witnessed reduction in the number of cargoes scheduled for examination by the customs service which increased the volume of imports.
Our correspondent reports that APM terminals took over the management of the Apapa Container Terminal in March 2006 and has invested about 190 million dollars (about N30 billion) on expansion and improvement of the facility.
The company said that it planned to spend additional 80 million (about N12.5 billion) on modernisation and expansion of its operating capacity.
APM Terminals introduced a new container scanning procedure in partnership with the NCS and Cotecna Destination Inspection at the terminal on July 14.
