Tax Evasion: Hotel, Three Establishments Sealed
Four establishments in Warri, including a hotel, have been sealed off by the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue for tax evasion.
The hotel, Mega Hilton, is owing the state N19.5 million while Joe Marine Institute of Nautical Studies and Research is owing N4.5 million.
Two motor companies are owing N1.5 million.
Speaking with newsmen after the exercise, the legal aide to the revenue board chairman, Mr Clark Ekpebe, said that the seal-off was as a result of a court ruling.
Ekpebe said that the High Court in Warri mandated the tax defaulting companies to pay up or be sealed.
He explained that the establishments were served with notification to appear in court which they ignored.
Ekpebe said that due process was strictly followed before the exercise, adding that the affected establishments must pay their debts before they could open for business.
According to him, removal of the seal will amount to contempt of court and anybody found in the premises will be arrested.
Ekpebe advised other defaulting companies in the state to pay their taxes to avoid embarrassment.
The manager of one of the motor business establishment, Mr Derick Obige, described the action as absurd.
Obige claimed that the board did not follow due process in its action as it did not serve them with a reminder notice.
The counsel to the Nautical studies institute, Mr Patrick Tobuye, confirmed that the institute was owing but said that they would meet with the board to know the amount.
The management of other establishments were not in their offices for comment.
