RSSDA Drums Support For Orphans, Widows
The Executive Director, Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), Mr. Noble Pepple has urged privileged individuals and corporate organisations to provide succour to widows and orphans in the society.
Mr. Pepple made the appeal Thursday in Oyigbo Local Government Area, as guest of honour at an End of Year Programme organised by Solace Place Foundation International (SOPAFON). He noted that government alone cannot provide the support needed by this critical section of the society, thus making it imperative for the well-to-do to show active concern in extending love and care to them.
The Executive Director who was represented by the General Manager of RSSDA, Mr. Sonye Dokubo said that RSSDA as a strategic interventionist agency of the state government was poised to fight poverty adding that over the years its programmes were targeted at the physically challenged widows and other less privileged groups in a bid to transforming their lives.
Mr. Pepple praised Solace Place Foundation International for touching the lives of thousands of orphans and widows and promised that RSSDA would increase its support to the body.
Earlier in her speech, founder/president of SOPAFON, Amb. Mercy Gani said the target of the foundation was to bring hope to the less privileged, widows, orphans, vulnerable children and destitute by providing rehabilitation, empowerment to improve their lives.
Mrs. Gani disclosed that since its establishment, five years ago, it had trained hundreds of widows, orphans and youths on different skills, free HIV/AIDS Counseling and testing and also given educational support to orphans and vulnerable children.
She, however, stated that the foundation needed to build an orphanage home and rehabilitation centre at Oyigbo, and other logistics like a bus and solicited for the support of the government and public spirited individuals and agencies.
The event was marked by dance, drama, gifts and other forms of entertainment.
There were also health talks from Doctors without Boarders and Impact On Reproductive Health Initiative, gospel messages while women groups from Etche, Oyigbo and Khana Local Government Areas presented food items and traditional dance.
