‘Why Rivers Holds CARNIRIV Yearly’
The Rivers State Government, says its decision in maintaining the CARNIRIV concept is aimed at consolidating and deepening the peace and security consciousness in the state.
The State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Nabbs Imegwu, who said this yesterday in Port Harcourt at a media briefing, explained that the move was also geared towards establishing the economy for sustainable development of the state and the sub-region.
The five-day Rivers CARNIRIV with the theme, “Peace Through Cultural Diversity” will begin on Tuesday, December 13. But a special pre-carnival activity would be the grand finale of the Miss ECOWAS Peace Pageant on Saturday, December 10 for which participants are drawn from countries within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The commissioner, however, said CARNIRIV, unlike its contemporaries across the country, remains a major cultural fiesta with lots of fun, heritage and extensive cultural content.
Dr Imegwu described CARNIRIV as the people’s carnival, saying, the increasing level of participation by Rivers people and residents of the state in the fiesta had attested to its wide acceptance by the people.
The commissioner noted that the volume and quality of high profile VIP visits to Port Harcourt lately and hosting of national and international events by the state had demonstrated the commitment of the Amaechi administration to sustain the existing peace in Port Harcourt.
He said this development had positioned Port Harcourt as a safe destination for both business and leisure.
The commissioner assured that the state was committed to deepening and exploiting the prevailing peaceful atmosphere for cultural integration, and appealed to media practitioners to contribute to the success of the 2011 edition of CARNIRIV.
