Amaechi’s Commitment To Education Excites Don
A University Don, Dr. Green Iheanachor has described the commitment of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi’s administration in education sector as a monumental and historical lift that would not be forgotten for generations to come.
Dr. Iheanachor who lectures at department of Political Science, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt said in terms of structures, policy formulation and implementation, the landmark achievements of the present administration in the sector would withstand the threat of time and neglect.
He explained that the construction of 500 primary schools across the state and idea of brining in experts to manage the state’s educational system is a welcome development noting that such approach was adopted by China and India and it resulted in transformation of which the two nations are forces to reckon with across the globe.
He said after the 1949 revolution in China, China went through a cultural revolution which impacted in their education positively such that today China is climbing high to occupy the apex of the world economy through her educational development noting that something happened in India whose certificates were rated below average but through educational revolution, her experts were ruling the world, such their thesis were being used in developed nations.
“So if we are using same approach as the governor has said, we expect similar revolutionary result that would bring transformation in our state,” he said.
The University lecturer however advised that the governor should give opportunity for local contents in such policies whereby the local educational functionaries and managers would also be involved in the programme so that we would take over easily from the foreigners, he advised.
Commenting on private investors in educational sector, Dr. Iheanachor said in view of the fact that motive of private investors in education was profit-driven, there was every need to adequately monitor, control and direct them to avoid abuse of the privilege as such could impact negatively on their products.
He lauded private investors at tertiary levels, pointing out that a good number of private investors at that level produce quality graduates and that their curriculum contents were laden toward personal engagements of graduates.
The don who delivered a paper “Democracy and the Problems and Prospects of Quality Education of National Development in Nigeria” at the recently concluded workshop organised by All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools in South South, held in Port Harcourt urged principals to view their place beyond common demand for better welfare as seen in other profession but to give priority to sacrifice as people in the profession to build the sector through devotion and sacrifices.
By so doing, problems affecting educational development at the Secondary School levels would be better addressed.
