Commissioner Inaugurates Committee On Waste Management
Communities within Port Harcourt and its environs in Rivers State have been charged to compliment Government’s effort in its desire at ensuring that the environment is cleared of refuse.
Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nyema Weli gave the charge in Port Harcourt while inaugurating a 15-man intervention Committee on Waste Management in collaboration with State Sanitation Authority.
Dr. Nyema advised the Communities to assist the committee by notifying it of uncleared refuse in their area and ensure that waste are not dumped at unauthorised places.
Explaining the need for the intervention committee, the Commissioner said, it is necessary to support the refuse contractors and enjoined them to work day and night to meet the expectation of the people of the State.
In his speech, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mr. Rufus Godwins, charged the committee to work without fear and congratulated them for accepting to serve the State.
Also speaking, the Chairman Environmental Sanitation Authority, Mr. Isobo Jack} said that the duty of the Intervention Committee was essential to the success of environmental cleanliness of the State.
He disclosed that for effective functioning of the Committee} Port Harcourt City have been divided into six zones.
In n1S acceptance speech, the chairman of the Committee, Mr. Napoleon Ewule who is also the Director of Sanitation and Safety in the Ministry assured that they wouid work seifiessiy to retain the confidence reposed in them.
Other members of the Committee include} U.S. Nmegbu, Ephraim Etitinwo} Abei Jeremiah} Biteye Amachree, Kadiio Kabari, Onengiye Franklin, Alabi Fredrica and Faye Douglas.
The rest are; Wobasi Ogbonda, fVlinabo Jack, Boyd Njiowhor, Ciarence Weii} George Okene and Francis Macauiay.
