Police Arrest Six-man Kidnap Gang … Rescues Victim, N6m Ramson
A student of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri in Imo State, Mr Omurah Tochukwu and a Port Harcourt based pools agent, Mr Amaechi Okoro were among a six man kidnapping gang arrested at the weekend by the men of the state police command in connection with the kidnap of the wife of a Commissioner in the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Mrs Mijaan Bathimus.
Briefing newsmen at the Police Officers Mess, Old GRA Port Harcourt last Saturday, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Suleman Abba said that his men arrested the kidnappers and rescued the victim unhurt during the operation.
According to the police boss, the kidnappers on August 20, this year at Elelenwo in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state kidnapped Mrs Mijaan Bathimus at about 11am while returning from church, adding that since the incident the police had been trailing the suspects till last Friday night when they were arrested and rescued the victim at a vicinity in Elimgbu community.
Mr Abba further disclosed that the N6 million paid as ransom to the kidnappers, 20 magazine rifles, 25 live ammunitions and a Hundai car belonging to the victim were also recovered from the suspects.
He commended the gallantry exhibited by the police officers during the operation noting that it was not an easy task.
The state police boss also announced that the police officers would be rewarded as a measure of appreciating their performance adding that the successful operation has further boosted the confidence of the police in fighting crime in the state.
He used the opportunity to call on the government in the country to equip the security agencies to enable them function effectively.
Mr Abba thanked the people of Rivers State for cooperating with security agencies especially the police in the state and assured that the state police command would continue to meet the challenges of security in the state.
Also speaking, the husband of the victim, Hon Ebia Bathimus expressed gratitude to God for the release of his wife and commended the police for the rescue operation adding that the success has further demonstrated that the police is equal to the task.
Speaking to journalists, the leader of the gang who is also an indigene of Enugu State Mr Onurah Tochukwu said he was lured into the operation by his friends.
