How To Achieve 35% Affirmative Action – SSANU
Unless women in Nigeria participate actively with their men counterpart in all human endeavour, the 35 per cent affirmative action for women will be a mere slogan.
The National Vice-President, East, of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Comrade Samuel C. Owhondah stated this in a solidarity message at the inauguration of the women wing of SSANU, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt yesterday.
Comrade Owhondah therefore challenged the women to mobilise themselves in order to take what belongs to them rather than wait for men to allocate positions in the name of affirmative action.
He explained that the objective of forming the women wing of SSANU was to sensitise and equip women for societal challenges especially the task ahead of the union in the state and federal levels.
Also speaking, the Chairman of SSANU, Rivers State University of Science and Technology Chapter, Comrade Tamunosisi Kivi stressed the importance of the women committee in the realisation of the union’s goals.
The National Deputy women leader, Eastern Zone of SSANU, Comrade (Dr) Ezinne Lolo Anyanwu charged SSANU women not to allow culture and gender to debar them from aspiring to any position in the country.
She reminded them that time has gone when women were regarded as house wives and lauded the women for coming together to inaugurate the committee.
Earlier in an address, the woman leader of SSANU, Rivers State University of Science and Technology Branch, Comrade Sarah E. Blackduck said the functions of the committee include coordination of activities of SSANU women and monitoring of the implementation of the affirmative action and gender equity among others.
The occasion was attended by the Registrar of RSUST, Mrs D. C. Odimabo, the former National Secretary of SSANU, Comrade S. C. Eyindah and SSANU women leader, Rivers State University of Education (UOE) Port Harcourt, Comrade Nkechi Okannah among others.
