Aspirant Urges Review Of LG Structure
As the Rivers State Government gears up to re-constitute local government administrations, a chairmanship aspirant for Okrika Local Government Council under the flagship of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister William Tamuno has advocated for the review of administrative structure in the local government system in the country.
Speaking in a phone in media programme organised by the Silverbird Communications, over the weekend in Port Harcourt, Barrister Tamuno posited that if the administrative structure into local councils are reviewed, it would inject effectiveness into the third tier of government.
According to him, the weak structure coupled with poor vision in leadership have stifled effective service delivery and people-oriented leadership at the local government.
He lamented that poor leadership in local councils over the years, have impacted negatively on the lives of the grassroot people not only in Rivers State but also nationwide
Tamuno also blamed poor funding, which in his view is responsible for the high recurrent expenditure witnessed in some local government councils.
The LG aspirant further spoke about the problem caused by excessive work force in the local councils, noting that often, this gives birth to duplication of functions and low productively.
He lashed the corrupt life of some local government chairmen, especially in the area of managing funds, blaming, the situation to the activities of few cabals who handpicked the LG public officers.
Tamuno believed that raising qualifications for local government chairmen and streamlining the functions of councils would go a long way in checking the excesses of elected LG officers.
The lawyer promised that if he wins the chairmanship position of Okrika Local Government Council, he would ensure that regular accountability forums were organised including holding town hall meetings.
He also promised to float a micro-finance loans scheme to support local fishermen and traders as a way of transforming the economic fortunes of the people.
