40 Million Unemployed In Nigeria-Body
The Association of Unemployed Youths in Nigeria says about 40 million able young people are unemployed in the country.
Quoting figures from the World Bank (WB) during a chat with newsmen over the weekend in Port Harcourt Coordinator of the body in Rivers State, Lady Igoniwari Halliday said they decided to adopt the WB statistics because it was more reliable.
She noted that though figures made available by the Federal Office of Statistics put the numbers at 30 million. The AUYON Rivers State Coordinator said, “such figures are not static and varies from year to year so we endorse that of the World Bank”.
Lady Halliday stated that the body has about 258,000 unemployed youths across each of the 23 local government areas in the state.
She said the body is non-partisan group with state coordinators in the 36 states of the country seeking for the welfare of the unemployed youths in the country.
Considering the plight of unemployed youths in the country, she stated that the body has commenced campaigns to seek for credible and accountable leaders, noting that the only way to curb unemployment in the country was to have purposeful leaders with the right economic policies.
Against this backdrop, Lady Halliday disclosed that the association has decided to adopt some selected candidates for the 2011 elections since they have demonstrated the zeal to address the plight of youths.
At the federal level, she noted that the association has decided to adopted President Goodluck Jonathan, while at the state level it has adopted Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
Other candidates adopted by the body include Hon. Magnus Abe for the Rivers State South-East Senatorial seat under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ken Chikere for Port Harcourt City Federal Constituency 1 and Mrs. Blessing Ibiba Nsiegbe for Port Harcourt City Federal Constituency ll.
Lady Halliday declared that the body also adopted Hon. Okorie Asita for Ahoada West and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Federal Constituency under the PDP, Hon. Dakuku Peterside for Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency and Betty Apiafi for Abua/Odual/Ahoada East Federal Constituency.
The body also adopted Douye Asari-Dokubo of the social Democratic Mega Party for Port Harcourt Federal Constituency ll saying”, we are voting them based on their track record and individual track record.
She therefore solicited for the support of all unemployed youths in the states to make sure that credible candidates emerge during the April polls.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
