Voters Registration: Bayelsans Petition INEC
Bayelsans have lodged a total of 3,000 complains which bothers on irregularities and anomalies discovered during the just concluded Voters Registers Display Exercise held nationwide.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Engr. Edwin Nwatalari who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen said Yenagoa local government to the complaint chart.
According to him, ‘we have no complained about the registration other than spelling error and photographs. We are processing the complaints and it is going through server. At the end of the exercise, these anomalies would be corrected’.
Nwatalari disclosed that 566,195 voters were registered during the just concluded voters registration exercise Bayelsa State, while 330 candidates were fielded by registered political parties for elective position.
The Yenagoa local government area, according to the Commissioner topped the voters’ registration chat with 151,000, Southern Ijaw-126,000, Ogbia-72,000, Ekeremor-63,000, while the least is Kolokuma/Opokuma with 25,000.
On the screening of the candidates, he said the Electoral Act did not empowerthe Commission to carry out such constitutional assignment, adding that it relies on the information supplied by the various political parties.
“The list of candidates displayed was forwarded to us by the INEC national secretariat and if there is additional information, we will act accordingly”, he said.
From the INEC list in Bayelsa, he said the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party fielded candidates for all elective positions.
The INEC Resident Commissioner said the process on the detective of multiple registrations through the Automatic Finder Print Identification System, has been concluded at the ward and local government level, adding that the server for the processing at the state level would soon be ready.
Nwatalari said any multiple registration discovered at any level of verification would be nullified. This is just as he commended the people of the state for their large turn out during the just concluded voters’ exercise.
